(합동참모본부 제공. 재판매 및 DB금지) 2026.7.16 ⓒ 뉴스1(서울=뉴스1) 김기성 기자 = 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 북미 대화 재개를 준비하면서 하반기 정례 한미 연합연습 '을지 자유의 방패'(UFS·Ulchi Freedom Shield)을 전격 축소했지만 한미일 3국의 정례 다영역 훈련 '프리덤 에지'(Freedom Edge)는 축소 없이 예정대로 진행하기 위해 준비 중인 것으로 확인됐다.클로이 모건 미 태평양사령부(PACOM) 대변인(해군 소령)은 26일 뉴스1의 질의에 "사령부는 일본 자위대, 한국군과 긴밀히 공조하며 2026년 프리덤 에지 연습을 준비하고 있다"라고 답했다.모건 대변인은 이어 "굳건한 한미일 3국 협력이 4년 차에 접어드는 가운데 이 핵심적인 다영역 연습은 태평양 전역의 평화와 안전을 보장하기 위해 우리가 공유하는 가치를 공고히 하고 상호운용성을 향상하며 국방 파트너십을 한층 강화할 것"이라고 설명했다.이어 "훈련에 대한 추가적인 세부사항은 추후 공개할 예정"이라고 덧붙였다.앞서 진영승 합동참모의장과 댄 케인 미국 합참의장, 우치쿠라 히로아키 일본 통합막료장은 지난달 미국 워싱턴D.C.에서 제23차 한미일 합참의장 회의를 열고 프리덤 에지 실시 등을 포함한 안보 협력 방안을 논의한 바 있다.프리덤 에지는 한미일 3국이 지난 2023년 캠프데이비드 정상회의에서 '다영역 훈련 시행'에 합의함에 따라 2024년 6월 최초 시행됐고, 같은 해 11월에 2차 훈련이 있었다. 주요 연습 내용은 해상 미사일 방어, 방공, 대잠수함작전 등이다.김여정 노동당 총무부장은 지난해 담화에서 이 같은 3국의 연합연습에 반발하며 "조선민주주의인민공화국의 주변에서 미일한이 행동으로 보여주고 있는 무모한 힘자랑 질은 분명코 스스로에게 좋지 못한 결과를 가져다주게 될 것"이라고 비난하기도 했다.또 박정천 당 중앙군사위원회 부위원장도 담화를 내고 "세계 최대 열점 지역인 조선반도(한반도) 지역에서 자행되고 있는 미일한의 무분별한 군사적 준동은 우리 국가의 안전 이익에 대한 엄중한 도전으로 되며 지역의 안정을 해치고 군사적 긴장을 고조시키는 주된 위험으로 된다"라고 주장한 바 있다.다만 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 UFS 연습 시작 당일인 지난 16일(현지시간) 전격 축소를 지시한 것을 시작으로, 북미 대화 재개를 위해 앞으로 예정된 한미 참여 연합연습이 추가로 영향을 받을 것이란 전망도 여전히 유효하다.군 당국에 따르면 한미는 올해 9~11월 핵·재래식 통합 도상연습(CNI TTX)인 '아이언 메이스'(Iron Mace)와 공군 연합 공중훈련인 '프리덤 플래그'(Freedom Flag) 및 쌍매훈련을 계획 중인 것으로 전해졌다.。

Chinese scientists on Wednesday released the first complete set of observational images captured by China's new-generation ground-based infrared telescope, filling a gap in the country's near-infrared astronomical observation capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign infrared detector technology, China News Service reported on Wednesday. 
The 80-centimeter near-infrared telescope was installed at Saishiteng Mountain, Lenghu township, Northwest China's Qinghai Province in October 2024. Jointly developed by Sun Yat-sen University and several partner institutions, the telescope is China's first to achieve scientific imaging in the 1.2-micrometer J band and 2.2-micrometer K band using domestically developed scientific-grade InGaAs and HgCdTe detectors. 
The telescope enables unattended remote operations, and can lock onto any target in the sky within 15 seconds. Its infrared capability allows it to see through interstellar dust, enabling it to observe cold and distant celestial objects that are difficult for optical telescopes to capture. 
According to Ma Bin, a professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy, Sun Yat-sen University who led the research team that released the infrared telescope's observational images, all three of the telescope's core astronomical observation capabilities were fully validated during operation. 
It rapidly responded to and tracked multiple gamma-ray bursts and supernova events, recording the evolution of their infrared afterglows following the explosions. It continuously monitored brown dwarfs, precisely capturing periodic variations in their atmospheric brightness. Using image-stacking technology, it also observed active galaxies billions of light-years away. 
Since its deployment in Lenghu, the system has supported infrared observations for more than 10 Chinese research institutions, accumulating valuable experience for the construction of future large-scale infrared telescopes. 
Lenghu township, where the world-class astronomical observation base takes shape, is hailed as "the most Mars-like place on the Earth." The astronomical observation base was said to be an astronomical observation site comparable to the top ones in the world by a Nature article published on August 18, 2021, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. 
Once prospered in 1950s due to its rich petroleum resources, Lenghu is now becoming a premier astronomical observation site and Mars-themed tourist destination, according to Xinhua News Agency.
